Captain.
The one who leads the ship and helps navigate it. Captains are elected as captain by crew mates. They have to be a careful line between aggressive and bloodthirsty, least they lose their position. They need to the ability and personality and keep a whole entire ship of misfits and criminals under control. Captains must be liked by their crew mates as well. Otherwise they may be replaced from being captain.
Quartermaster.
The rank after captain, they're the captain's equal. They're elected for their rank as well. They deal with handing out rations, settling disputes between crew mates, keeping track of treasure, keeping track of records of the crew, punishing misdeeds and acting captain when the captain is off ship for whatever reason. They also take over as captain if something happened to the ship captain.
First Mate.
They are second in command, and help out the captain and quartermaster with their duties. If the captain dies, quits or gets off the ship for a while to handle something, they will act as quartermaster. First mate is an elected rank as well.
Sailing Master.
The main navigator of the ship, they spend most their time sailing the ship. They often use maps, compasses and other utilities for navigation.
Mate.
The rank of everybody else on the ship. They handle whatever duties are given to them. They usually specialize in one thing, and usually handle that.
Cabin Mate.
They are children and teenagers who are training to become well established pirates. They don't have a specific mentor, and are instead mentored by everyone on the ship. Others on the ship will show them how to do things, and help them out with it. They must be supervised when doing ship duties other than cleaning, to make sure they, the ship and everyone else stays safe. They often becomes mates at the age of 16, given they've been cabin mates since a young age. Which most do.
